Congressman Sam Rayburn

Saturday, April 21, 2011, I headed up to Bonham, Texas to find Congressman Sam Rayburn. Congressman Rayburn is buried in Wild Willow Cemetery in the center of Bonham. The best way to get there is by taking the Sam Rayburn Tollway (formerly State Highway 121).

Shortly after entering Bonham, I noticed signs for the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum and the Sam Rayburn house. I’m starting to think Congressman Rayburn was somebody important. Continue reading “Congressman Sam Rayburn and PFC Kenneth Lyon”

Govenor & Mrs. Connally in Austin, Texas

There are quite a few notable people buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin, Texas. The most famous is Stephen F. Austin, himself. Nearby are Governor and Mrs. Connally, Waggoner Carr, Governor Ann Richards and a marker for former Dallas Cowboy’s coach Tom Landry.

Mr. Landry was planning on being buried in Austin, but later changed his mind and decided to be buried in Dallas. His status as a legend in Dallas was too great for him not to be buried there. The plot Mr. Landry purchased now has a marker for him. This marker is more elaborate than the actual grave marker at the Sparkman Hillcrest Memorial Park. President & Mrs. Johnson in Stonewall, Texas

Over spring break, my family took a trip down to south Texas. We planned a road trip that would stop in Fredricksburg, Stonewall and Austin for a few days. My darling spouse wanted to see some sights and I needed to photograph where President and Mrs. Johnson were buried.

President and Mrs. Johnson are buried in the Johnson Family Cemetery located on the Lyndon B. Johnson Ranch in Stonewall, Texas. The ranch became part of the National Parks Service after the passing of Mrs. Johnson. Continue reading “President & Mrs. Johnson in Stonewall, Texas”

A Day in Dealey Plaza

Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas (Nov. 22, 2010)
Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas (Nov. 22, 2010)

I spent most of the day in Dealey Plaza outside the Texas School Book Depository (now The Sixth Floor Museum) this Monday, November 22, 2010. I took time lapse photos in various locations most of the day. I started out before 7 a.m. and left sometime around 2 p.m. Lucky for me I remembered to pack a lunch.

I did not know really what to expect, but right on queue a crowd of people showed up around noon time on the north side of Dealey Plaza. There were people all over the place with film crews, radio stations and mounted Dallas Police Officers. Continue reading “A Day in Dealey Plaza”

Photo Shoot with Secret Service Agents

Once again lady luck was on my side as I got the opportunity to photograph Secret Service Agents Jerry Blaine and Clint Hill. Agent Hill is the Secret Service man seen climbing on the back of President Kennedy’s limo moments after he was shot. Agent Hill was assigned to protect First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. There were a lot of Secret Service agents on hand with the President, First Lady, Vice-President and Mrs. Johnson all in the same motorcade through Dallas.

Agents Blaine and Hill were at The Sixth Floor Museum promoting their new book, The Kennedy Detail (read JFK’s Secret Service Agents Break Their Silence at The Sixth Floor Museum). It is a good read and I highly recommend it. Continue reading “Photo Shoot with Secret Service Agents”

Chief Jesse Curry and Others at Grove Hill Memorial Park

Grove Hill Memorial Park is located in East Dallas, near Fair Park. This is one of the largest cemeteries in Dallas. I had to ask for assistance because they have more than 60,000 graves. I was assisted by Don at the front desk and Melody Rekieta.

Grove Hill Memorial Park is a few miles east of Fair Park in Dallas, Texas. There I found Dallas Police Chief Jesse Curry, businessman George Dealey and some old family friends, the Von Erichs. Blanch Barrow, mother of Clyde Barrow, is also buried somewhere at Grove Hill. Continue reading “Chief Jesse Curry and Others at Grove Hill Memorial Park”

Officer J.D. Tippit and Musician Stevie Ray Vaughan at Laurel Land

Laurel Land is located in South Dallas, also known as Oak Cliff. I had to ask for directions to the proper section. It was a sunny day with people out visiting loved ones.

Officer Tippit is located along a fence where the road meanders and the burial ground shrink.  This is my way of saying the skinny part of the cemetery between the road and the fence.

Officer Tippit is buried next to Officer Carl Jackson Cooke (died May 2, 1972). Continue reading “Officer J.D. Tippit and Musician Stevie Ray Vaughan at Laurel Land”
