I don’t normally experiment with my photographs. I like them exactly as they are shot. My usual enhancements are in line with what a darkroom technician can do. I adjust the color, improve the contrast and remove some of the dust. I don’t like cropping my images because Holga photographs display best when showing the entire image. Kennedy Assassination Tour Summer 2012
Monday, July 2, 2012, marks the beginning of my Kennedy Assassination Tour Summer 2012 for my book, Death by Holga: 11.22.63. Initially, I was calling this jaunt around the country my Southwest by Southwest Tour, because of the airline I am using. But they are not paying me for any endorsement, so that title has been nixed. The JFK Project Tour Begins
And so my JFK Project tour begins next week. I will start hunting down the people, places and things associated with the Kennedy assassination. I have been doing this locally for the last year, but now it is time to venture outside the Lone Star State (see Death by Holga Road Trip before Thanksgiving). John F. Kennedy’s Dallas Hearse up for Auction in Scottsdale
I swear these things just keep finding me.
Last year I found out about Lee Harvey Oswald’s coffin being auction. Today, I read that the hearse that moved President John F. Kennedy’s body from the emergency room at Parkland Hospital to Air Force One at Dallas Love Field is now up for auction. Continue reading “John F. Detective James Leavelle at the Old Dallas Police Headquarters
Mission accomplished. I have photos of Det. James Leavelle at the Dallas Municipal Building (a.k.a. the old Dallas Police Headquarters). The Holga shots are yet to be developed. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well this those pictures too.
More on this photo shoot coming soon. Cheers.
Dallas Municipal Building, Former Dallas Police Headquarters
Dallas Municipal Building
2014 Main Street, Dallas, Texas
I did a walk through of the Dallas Municipal Building (DMB) to check out the basement where Lee Harvey Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby. I want to see if the location is really worth photographing.
In order to film at the DMB, I need to submit an application with $50 fee, have proof of insurance and pay $35 per hour for a security escort. The fee and the security are easily handled, but the insurance will cost $300 plus for a year policy. This is going to be one expensive photo. Allen Baumgardner, Assistant Embalmer for Lee Harvey Oswald
My JFK Project, Death By Holga: 11.22.63, is getting stranger or more unusual by the day. After hearing about Lee Harvey Oswald’s coffin being up for action in California, I gave Baumgardner Funeral Home in Fort Worth a call. Oswald’s Coffin at Auction
I learned that Lee Harvey Oswald’s original coffin will be auctioned off in California. This is a bizarre piece of news, but it is true. Continue reading “Oswald’s Coffin at Auction”
Lee Harvey Oswald at Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park
Shannon Rose Hill Memorial Park
7301 East Lancaster, Fort Worth, Texas, 76112
Rose Hill Cemetery is located in East Fort Worth. It was very quiet on a Sunday morning. Piper and I were the only ones around before 10 a.m. After a bit of searching we could not find Lee Harvey Oswald in Section 17. Fortunately, the section numbers were printed on the curb and an image from Find A Grave was very helpful. The ground was very dewy. Our shoes were getting soaked. Photographer Bob Jackson and Det. James Leavelle at The Sixth Floor Museum
Don’t ask me how I got so lucky, but I did. Not only did I get the chance to meet Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Robert Jackson, he also sat for a few photos for my JFK project at The Sixth Floor Museum. Mr. Jackson is famous for his photograph of Jack Ruby shooting Lee Harvey Oswald in the basement of the Dallas Police Headquarters.
Before I photographed Mr. Jackson, I got a chance to hear him speak (read Photographer Bob Jackson and Detective James Leavelle at The Sixth Floor Museuem). As an added surprise I discovered that Dallas Police Det. James Leavelle, who was handcuffed to Oswald when he was shot, was in the audience that day. I got a couple of photos of Det. Leavelle while he was signing autographs. I talked to Det. Leavelle about posing for my JFK project at a later date. He gave me his contact information.
