I had so much fun going walkabout with my darling spouse and my Nikon D7000 with 35mm lens, that we ventured over to Fort Worth for a little antique shopping. The good news is that we saw lots of stuff. The better news is that we did not buy anything other than lunch.

In light of the Paula Deen scandal, I can’t help but notice all the stereotypical, racial items for sale in antique shops. As you will see in my photos, there are negative characterizations of African Americans, Native Americans, Italian Americans, Africans and even angelic white children. Please take my photos with a grain of salt. I am only showing what I saw.

Allen Baumgardner, Assistant Embalmer for Lee Harvey Oswald https://mrholga.com/2010/12/allen-baumgardner-assistant-embalmer-for-lee-harvey-oswald/ Thu, 02 Dec 2010 12:15:37 +0000 http://www.mrholga.com/?p=80 My JFK Project, Death By Holga: 11.22.63, is getting stranger or more unusual by the day. After hearing about Lee Harvey Oswald’s coffin being up for action in California, I gave Baumgardner Funeral Home in Fort Worth a call.

I talked with Allen Baumgardner, assistant embalmer to Oswald in 1963. I asked him if he was game for being part of my book. We originally made plans for a photo shoot after the holidays.

I am planning on setting a date this summer.

Oswald’s Coffin at Auction https://mrholga.com/2010/12/oswalds-coffin-at-auction/ Wed, 01 Dec 2010 12:14:35 +0000 http://www.mrholga.com/?p=78 I learned that Lee Harvey Oswald’s original coffin will be auctioned off in California. This is a bizarre piece of news, but it is true.

Allen Baumgardner, assistant embalmer for Oswald in 1963 and official embalmer for his exhumation in 1981, kept the original coffin. Oswald’s body was exhumed to determine that the remains were really Oswald an not a look-alike Soviet agent.

After Oswald’s exhumation in 1981, a new coffin was required to bury Oswald.

The Dallas Morning News reported the coffin, auctioned off on December 16, 2010, fetched $87,468. The winning bidder wanted to remain anonymous.

Rose Hill Cemetery is located in East Fort Worth. It was very quiet on a Sunday morning. Piper and I were the only ones around before 10 a.m. After a bit of searching we could not find Lee Harvey Oswald in Section 17. Fortunately, the section numbers were printed on the curb and an image from Find A Grave was very helpful. The ground was very dewy. Our shoes were getting soaked.

Oswald’s original marker was taken. A replacement marker with only his name now resides. The marker says OSWALD in white letters on pink granite.

I took photos with iPhone, Nikon D70, Holga G and Holga PWC.
